Facebook just made an acquisition of Mobile Technologies, a company specializing in voice recognition and translation software.
"More than one billion people around the world use Facebook every day, every month, we are always looking for ways to help connect the world as well"
After reading this sentence, I can not help but see the Tower of Babel, the legendary tower from an age when the world's population would have been connected by the use of a single language. This sentence has nothing mythological since it was published on the personal profile of the product manager Tom Stocky, to accompany the announcement of the acquisition of Mobile Technologies.
Jibbigo
The Jibbigo application works very simply on apple & Android. You choose the original language and the arrival and you save a sentence talking high-voice language. The application will transcribe your words written in both languages (to check that there is no inaccuracy in the input) and repeat the sentence in the target language. Available in over 20 different languages, iPhone & Android apps should remain functional. We who have the habit of seeing the product of acquisition disappear in 5 minutes, it's pretty good news.
With this product, Mobile Technologies ambition was very humble and allow ideas "transcend nations and cultures." Facebook was the perfect fusion to enable them to achieve this goal on a critical mass of users.

Tom Stocky Note that Facebook still sees the acquisition as "a long-term investment in our product roadmap."
We should therefore not expect to see this happen advanced speech recognition & translation in the near future ... but it is an interesting indication of Facebook's aspirations for the future.
While the internet has always been shown as a means of communication with the other side of the world ... Facebook might want to take you to the next step and allow you to exchange fluid and transparent manner with people who do not speak your language.
