Study: Posting Self Photos on Facebook Hurts Intimacy

It is quite natural to want to post pictures of us on Facebook - sharing is what social networking is about, after all. But up until a couple of rolls of film on the site, which had better go read this: New research suggests that the exchange selfies online leads to a decrease in intimacy with your partner.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham, University of the West of England, Heriot Watt University and the University of Edinburgh gathered to see how people photos uploaded to Facebook affects social position. Participants were asked to rate how often a Facebook friend shared photos of themselves and their families. Participants were also asked to rate the quality of their relationship with the person whose photos are examined.

It turns out that nobody likes a narcissist. "The increase in the frequency of exchanges of photographs of the car, regardless of the type of target to share photos, refers to a decrease in privacy," says the study. A notable exception is the family: Your mother will love you no matter how many times you cup camera.

The study also found that certain types of photos are better received than others. "A companion to share more pictures showing the family or events related to scores increased support while your partner share more pictures of friends was associated with a lower score of support." Jealousy perhaps?

The authors conclude that "people must actively adjust their privacy settings to ensure that the communication does not prejudge relationships ... and prospects. "For more information on how to read our complete guide to Facebook privacy settings.
